16TH SEED RALLIES TO BEAT NO. 2 SEED IN USTA 16S

Janet Walker says she doesn't play her best tennis when she's behind. Mary Carlisle White probably doesn't agree.

The 16th-seeded Walker lost the first set to the second-seeded White at love, and trailed, 4-1, in the third set, but rallied to pull off a 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory and the biggest upset so far in the USTA Girls 16s Clay Court National Championships Wednesday at the Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club.

The victory made an unlikely quarterfinalist of Walker, a player who was so sick last week that she pulled out of the doubles with Virginia Beach's Jessica Zaganczyk. The two won the Florida Open doubles title a year ago.

At times Wednesday, Walker played as though she was still feeling the effects of her illness. But whenever it looked as though White was in command, Walker came alive.

``I just started going for it,'' she said.

Walker, a Seffner, Fla., native, joins seven other seeds in today's 9 a.m. quarterfinals, including No. 1 Jody Anglin of the Bronx, N.Y., who had to survive a tense first set before ousting No. 15 Alexandra Stevenson of San Diego, 7-6, 6-2.

Anglin's quarterfinal opponent, Ivy Wang of Haverford, Pa., finally lost a game Wednesday, but still played well enough to dispatch Stephanie Hazlett, 6-2, 6-4. Wang had won all 36 games she had played in her first three matches.

In Wednesday's other fourth-round matches, No. 3 Lauren Rose of Toledo, Ohio, held off No. 13 Jenny Miller of Savannah, Ga., 2-6, 7-5, 6-3; No. 6 Julie Ditty of Ashland, Ky., outlasted No. 11 Tammy Encina of Miami Beach, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3; No. 10 Kristy Dascoli topped Kathy Sell of Moorestown, N.J., 4-6, 7-5, 6-1; No. 12 Jennifer Heiser of Stockton, Calif., took out No. 4 Christa Grey of Seminole, Fla., 6-1, 6-4; and No. 8 Holly Parkinson of Cherry Hill, N.J., beat No. 14 Katherine Nasser of Arlington Heights, 6-3, 7-5. by CNB
