The new requirement to participate in high school extra-curricular activities this school year will be at least a 1.3 grade point average.
To join athletic teams, clubs, bands or other groups this fall, a student must have earned at least a 1.3 average for the final grading period of the 1993-94 year.
Ninth graders' eligibility will be based on final grades for the eighth grade.
A 1.3 grade point average is roughly the equivalent of a ``D'' letter grade.
Here's a look at some of the policy's key points:
Eligibility will be determined by the previous period's grades, except for the first marking period of the school year - when final grades of the preceding year will be the criteria.
A student who fails more than one subject during a grading period - including chorus, band, orchestra and physical education classes - will be ineligible, regardless of the student's overall grade point average.
Teachers will give students with shaky grades progress reports if those students risk losing their eligibility. Coaches and group sponsors also will be notified.
Tutoring programs designed to boost academic achievement are not considered extra-curricular activities.
The policy doesn't apply to special education students, whose eligibility will be determined case-by-case.
For the 1995-1996 school year, the required average will be at least a 1.7. Beginning in the 1996-97 year, the required average will be 2.0, the equivalent of a C.
