Cal Woolard of Suffolk, former head softball coach and assistant girls basketball coach at Norfolk Collegiate, has been named to replace Joy Fagan as girls basketball, volleyball and softball coach at Greenbrier Christian Academy.
Fagan is heading back to Cedarville College in Ohio on July 27 and will become an assistant coach in girls basketball and softball. In addition, she will be an adjunct professor in Spanish and work on her master's degree.
``It's a privilege to going back to my alma mater,'' she said.
While at GCA, Fagan took groups of students to the Caribbean on mission trips during spring breaks. Her group of 15 went to Venezuela this past spring, and taking over that project in the future will be Terrilyn Van Beveren, who has assisted Fagan in the past.
Fagan has been directing a series of camps this summer and will wrap up her local activities with a volleyball clinic July 25-27.
Greenbrier Christian Athletic Director Ed Bailey said he is interviewing for a new boys basketball coach to replace Ron McGuire, who will concentrate on football and work with baseball. Also, former coach Nat Aydlett has resigned from the faculty.
GCA has named its football, baseball and softball fields and track after Bailey. It is now known officially as the Ed Bailey Athletic Complex.
TIGER MOVES: Several changes are taking place at Oscar Smith High besides the physical move to a different part of Chesapeake.
Athletic Director Bill Myers says he is not sure if Charlie Stukes will handle the boys track next year. Stukes had filled in for Bob Glisson, who was chairman of the Tigers' transition team.
Myers also is looking for a boys soccer coach to replace Dan Shiffer, who has resigned to take a similar position at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk.
Oscar Smith High School is in the throes of moving from 2500 Rodgers St., to 1994 Tiger Dr., which is off Great Bridge Boulevard.
Oscar Smith High will reopen at its new site Wednesday, Sept. 7.
GARRETT TAKES IT EASY: Jim Garrett, former Deep Creek High athletic director and football coach, is taking it easy this summer and is looking forward to doing some gardening along with his cattle chores at his Suffolk home.
``I usually have a spring garden, but it usually turns to weeds when the football season rolls around,'' he said. ``This year, I'm going to plant a nice fall garden.''
Garrett is still on the Deep Creek faculty and will teach physical education and weight lifting classes this coming school year.
``I have no plans to coach anything,'' he said. ``And I have more time for my family.'' by CNB
