George H. Laird Jr., 82, of the 1500 block of North Shore Road, a retired Navy captain and decorated World War II submarine commander, died July 20, 1994, in a local hospital.
Born in Alameda, Calif., Captain Laird was a 1933 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis Md. During World War II, he was the commanding officer of the submarines Blackfin and Hammerhead. Prior to the war, he served on the battleship USS Arizona. In the Korean War, Captain Laird commanded the ammunition ship Chara. Among his decorations, Captain Laird was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with Combat ``V'' and one Gold Star. He retired as commanding officer Naval Ordnance Plant, York, Pa., after 30 years in the Navy.
Captain Laird was a member of the Navy Mutual Aid Association, the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Murry Clan Society of North America.
Captain Laird is survived by his wife, Catherine Palmer Laird; three sons, George H. Laird III of York, Pa., James H. Laird of North Conway, N.H., Michael S. Laird of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a daughter, Heather L. Martin of Norfolk; and five grandchildren, Byron and David Laird of York, Pa., and Jeffrey, Brad and Hilary Martin of Norfolk.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 1994 by the Rev. Harold E. Thorton and Father Julian B. Goodman at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts, Norfolk Chapel. Burial will be private in Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Navy Relief Society or Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
