The senior assistant principal at Northeastern High School was appointed Thursday to take charge of the school until a new principal is found.
Becky Phelps will hold the school's top post until officials hire a permanent replacement for former Principal Eugene Yarbrough, who left the system at the end of June.
The district's first choice for principal from an earlier search turned down the job, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Schools Superintendent Joseph Peel said.
Response to new advertisements for the position has been strong, Peel said. He said he hoped to have the job filled by Labor Day, but it was possible that Phelps could spend months or the entire school year at the helm.
During a brief special meeting Thursday, the School Board also closed the last gap in a major reshuffling among the district's elementary school leaders by appointing a principal for Sheep-Harney Elementary.
To the delight of more than a dozen faculty members from the school who attended the session, the board promoted the school's current assistant principal, Yvonne Walton.
Walton was one of five people interviewed for the job, all from within the school system, spokesman Charles White said. Peel and board members noted that teachers from the school were also involved in the search process.
``We're very pleased,'' said Sheep-Harney kindergarten teacher Caroline Bright. ``She's very well-liked by our student population and our staff and community.''
Walton will replace Shel Davis, who is moving to head up Central Elementary. Central Principal Cecil Perry is moving to Pasquotank Elementary to fill in for Rita Collie, who has taken a position in the central administration.
The principals at Weeksville and H.L. Trigg elementaries are trading posts.
Walton was out of town Thursday but was expected to be at the school today, officials said. by CNB
