A program to help low-income people attend college has won a $1.2 million federal grant.
The grant, spread over four years, will go to the Educational Opportunity Center. The center is run by the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education, a coalition of 13 colleges.
The center is open to everyone, but its primary focus is to serve disadvantaged people. The center provides referrals to general education classes, help in finding financial aid and brochures on colleges.
The center's main office is at 7010M Auburn Ave. in Norfolk, but it also has satellite offices in the social services offices of most Hampton Roads cities. Appointments to the center can be made by calling 855-7468 or, for residents of the Peninsula, (800) 305-0100. by CNB
