FREIGHTER RUNS AGROUND

A 641-foot Japanese freighter carrying automobiles ran aground in Chesapeake Bay about four miles southwest of Tilghman Island, Md., early Thursday.

The Coast Guard responded to a report that the Pacific Breeze, en route to New York City, struck bottom at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday. The ship was afloat again at 11:20a.m. and remained anchored two miles west of where it went aground, Coast Guard Lt. Claudia Gelzer in Baltimore said.

No injuries or damages to the ship's cargo were reported, but, Gelzer said, the vessel would be held up at least a day before divers finished surveying the hull for damages.
