That Virginia would search out - and welcome - Ron Angelone as the new head of the state Department of Corrections is mind-boggling (``Prison chief's anything but ambiguous,'' news, July 17).
Using violence to deal with those who are in the criminal-justice system is not the answer. When charges of protest are filed against his inhumane actions toward inmates, they are regarded as ``frivolous.'' By whose standards? Perhaps if Mr. Angelone missteps, he, too, should be beaten, stunned, stripped and shot.
Any God-fearing person, Christian or not, surely would concede that such treatment of another - a four-legged creature or especially a human being - will never be successful. It is sad to learn that we in Virginia have stooped so low to deter crime. Emptying our souls of moral values is not an acceptable solution.
Do we, as Virginians, want people like Mr. Angelone and those who hire him to represent us? I certainly don't.
