BANK OF SUFFOLK UPGRADES BUSIEST OFFICE THE PLAZA BRANCH WILL REMAIN OPEN DURING PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION. AFTER AUG. 1, CUSTOMERS WILL NEED TO USE THE OTHER BRANCHES.

THE BANK OF SUFFOLK is investing nearly half a million dollars in the busiest of its five offices.

The branch at 1000 N. Main St., in the Suffolk Plaza Shopping Center, is in a ``great location,'' said Robert H. Johnson, vice president.

The expansion will include a drive-up automatic teller machine, the bank's first, and two additional drive-through lanes.

Inside, the bank will have two additional loan offices and two more work stations for tellers, bringing the total to six. The size of the lobby will double.

The bank was founded in 1967 by the present chairman of the board, G.P. Jackson.

The main office is at 101 E. Washington St. The other branches are at 1512 Holland Road, 6423 Whaleyville Blvd. and 625 E. Washington St.

The Plaza branch will remain open during part of the construction. After Aug. 1, customers will need to use the other branches until work is completed in mid-September.

The branches at 1512 Holland Road and 101 E. Washington St. will have Saturday morning drive-through hours from 9 a.m. to noon until then, Johnson said.

In other business news:

PHYSICAL THERAPY WORKS is expanding its space and making exterior improvements to the property at 1931 Holland Road.

Owners Tory and Trenton Bishop opened the business in December 1991. Tory is a physical therapist. Her husband is a certified public accountant.

The business started with the couple and a therapist assistant, Trenton Bishop said.

Because of the increasing workload, there are now three additional therapists and two assistants.

The expansion project will double the available space, Trenton Bishop said. Additional rehabilitation equipment will be added.

Work is expected to be complete by mid-August.

Landscaping and parking lot paving will be finished about two months later.

Physical Therapy Works is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

TWIN B AUTO Parts has moved into the space formerly occupied by Big A Auto Parts.

The auto parts store at 3464 Pruden Blvd. once sold mainly wholesale to repair shops.

The focus of Twin B Auto Parts, though, is to sell ``directly to the do-it-yourself, walk-in retail public,'' said Art Bright, a spokesman at the company's headquarters in Virginia Beach.

``We're very glad we put a store in Suffolk,'' said Bright, a Suffolk native who still lives in the city.

Bright has been with the business for 12 years. It was founded 20 years ago by president Bill O'Connor.

There are 29 Twin B outlets. The Suffolk store is the most recent.

Others are located in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and on the Peninsula and the Eastern Shore.

Twin B purchased Big A this spring and began a major interior conversion.

Parts deliveries are made to the store twice a day, Bright said.

``We can usually have a part the same day.''

Hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by JOHN H. SHEALLY II
