The School Board will hold three public hearings this fall to gather comments on proposed attendance zones for the new Hickory High School, which is scheduled to open in fall 1996.
The hearings will be Sept. 12, Oct. 10 and Nov. 14. They are scheduled for 7 p.m. in the school board room of the school administration building on Cedar Road. However, if too many people are scheduled to speak, the location may be changed.
School officials have proposed changes in the attendance zones for Great Bridge and Deep Creek high schools that would send some of those students to the new Hickory High.
The proposals also include changing the two Great Bridge middle schools to traditional middle schools in 1996, each serving grades six through eight. Great Bridge Middle North now serves sixth and seventh grades, while Great Bridge Middle South houses eighth and ninth grades.
Great Bridge Middle North would become a feeder school for Hickory High, while Great Bridge Middle South would be a feeder school for Great Bridge High. Ninth-graders would attend Hickory and Great Bridge high schools.
Superintendent C. Fred Bateman said three public hearings were necessary to allow the public to wade through such complicated proposals. ``When you're considering changing an established neighborhood from one high school to another, I think you ought to be thorough and allow as many opportunities for public comment as you can,'' he said.
The School Board is expected to vote on boundary changes Nov. 28.
