``NOBODY'' IS OUTRAGEOUS AND A REAL PAGE TURNER

LYNN MARCHETTE thought she'd struck gold. Not only was her Boston TV talk show being considered for syndication, but she met a fabulous man while she was interviewing in Los Angeles with the big shots.

Greg was movie-star handsome, thoughtful, generous. He swept Lynn off her feet.

And then things began to get a little weird. Greg seemed a bit pushy when he insisted she buy revealing clothing. When he cajoled her into getting a tattoo; it excited but also worried her. Then he began to insinuate himself into the lives of her friends and family. They thought Greg was a great guy and couldn't really understand why Lynn chose to stop seeing him.

That's when Greg got scary.

Molly Katz, a former stand-up comic and contributing writer to major magazines, knows how to write a page turner. And that's all that ``Nobody Believes Me: A Novel of Love and Terror'' (Ballantine Books, $15) is. The story will grab you right from the start as the plausible picture of a pathologically sadistic personality comes into focus. All too soon, however, it soon becomes predictable and increasingly outrageous.

But even while Katz goes for the cheapest possible plot twists, she manages to keep you stringing along.

Take this one to the beach.
