Dr. James Hubert Townes died Thursday, July 21, 1994, in Chesapeake General Hospital. Dr. Townes was Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Summer School, chemist, and professor of chemistry at Elizabeth City State University. He was also a professor at Norfolk State University.
Dr. Townes was a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and Advisor at Bethany Baptist Church of Chesapeake. He is survived by his wife, Marion K. Townes of Chesapeake, his son, Lawrence A. Dillon-Townes of Newport News, his daughter, Vickie Y. Townes of Portsmouth, three sisters: Alma Foote and Maxine Greene of Chesapeake, Celestine Curtis of Chicago, a brother, Sylvester Townes of Williamsburg, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, James H. Townes, Jr., and a granddaughter.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Jake Manley. Burial will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park in Chesapeake. Graves Funeral Home of Norfolk is in charge.
