JEEP FLIPS, TWO HURT

Two people were ejected Sunday from a Jeep they were riding in, including a woman who was still fastened to her seat by a seat belt.

Neither was seriously hurt.

Police said the driver, Remona K. Barrett, 35, of the 100 block of Bob Lane, lost control of the Jeep and it flipped several times in the 5100 block of Shore Drive near Independence Boulevard about 5:45p.m., police said.

The Jeep, heading east on Shore Drive, rolled onto the median.

``It flipped a couple times and went airborne a couple times,'' said Lou Thurston, a police spokesman.

The vehicle then rolled into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes, but its momentum had slowed. It hit a 1978 Datsun head-on, but caused only minor damage. The driver of that car was not hurt.

Both people in the Jeep were thrown by the impact. Barrett seat was ejected with her. She and William Barrett, 33, were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where they were treated and released. Police said charges are pending against the driver and that excessive speed and alcohol were involved. The accident left debris strewn across a long stretch of westbound Shore Drive. Authorities closed the westbound lanes and alternated traffic in both directions using the eastbound lanes. Normal traffic flow was restored about two hours after the accident.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
