PAPA JOHN'S, 3 OTHER SHOPS TO MOVE INTO COLLEY CENTER BESIDES THE PIZZA STORE: SUB SHOP, GROCERY, HAIR SALON.

Ghent in Norfolk, known for its trendy shops and hip hang-outs, is about to
build on that reputation.
Two eateries, an independently owned grocery store and a hair salon will
replace the former Ghent Laundromat and Tony's Hot Dogs on Colley Avenue
between 20th and 21st streets across from Crestar Bank.
Papa John's Pizza, Subway Sandwiches & Salads, Peter's Ten Top and
Supercuts will occupy the strip mall that will carry the Papa John's name.
Papa John's is scheduled to open Aug. 15, the others by Sept. 1.
``The object is to bring more attention to Ghent while servicing the (Old
Dominion University) campus,'' said Jim Riekel, vice president and chief
operating officer of the Richmond-based Papa John's franchise. The Ghent
restaurant will be the franchise's fifth South Hampton Roads location.
``The Ghent location should be our No. 1 store,'' Riekel said. Papa John's
will add 10 more locations by the end of the year, he said.
Construction crews are gutting the entire building except for the original
masonry, Riekel said. The building will be subdivided, with new walls,
ceilings, interiors and a full-length canopy. Renovation is to be completed
by Aug. 7.
``That corner has been an eyesore for years,'' Riekel said. He and his
fellow tenants plan to decorate their stores in a contemporary '90s theme, he
said.
Negotiations for the location took more than a year, said Mike Zarpas,
assistant vice president for retail at Goodman Segar Hogan Hoffler.
Introduction of the new strip mall exemplifies the revival of businesses in
Ghent, he said.
``There is a lot of movement happening again,'' Zarpas said. ``It's the
antique hub of the region. It's bringing a good, upscale group to spend money
- that's what we're looking for. We're trying to capitalize on that group.''
Peter's Ten Top, owned by Peter Pittman, will offer produce and some cooked
food on its premises.
