FILTRONA'S EARNINGS JUMP

   American Filtrona Corp. said its second-quarter net income rose 144 
percent, reflecting a $2.34 million gain on the sale of its industrial 
filtration unit. The Richmond-based manufacturer of filters and plastic 
products reported net income of $3.93 million, up from $1.61 million in the 
comparable three months of 1993. Per-share earnings were $1.05, up from 43 
cents.   Revenues for the June 30 quarter rose 5 percent to $36.19 million 
from $34.3 million in the '93 second quarter.
