WILLIAM E. JOHNSON SR.

William Ernest Johnson Sr., 91, a retired civil service employee, died Friday, July 22, 1994, in DePaul Medical Center.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Elizabeth City and the son of John Franklin and Ella Mitchell Johnson. He was the widower of Ruth Sweeny Johnson and a member of New Mount Zion AME Church. During his membership at Mount Zion he had been active in many aspects of the church, including the Senior Choir, member of the Finance Committee, and a Trustee. He was an avid golfer and belonged to Senior Golfers of Virginia. He was a member of Tidewater Lodge (NU)102, Free and Accepted Masons, Prince affiliate.

Survivors include a son, William E. Johnson Jr. of New York City; a grandchild, Mary F. Becker of Virginia Beach; great-grandchildren, Kristin M. Becker and Warren Johnathan Ernest Becker; son-in-law, Bryan R. Becker of Virginia Beach; and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Presley of New York. He will also be missed by a devoted caretaker and mother of his granddaughter, Rosetta F. Sykes of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in New Mount Zion AME Church, Bolling Brook, by the Rev. James G. Smith. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The body will be placed in church at 9 a.m. Saturday. The family will be at the home of Helen Copeland, 3415 Lens Ave., Norfolk.
