Joanna Williams Alexander, 75, of the 1200 block of Covel St., a retired teacher, died Monday, July 25, 1994, in Sentara Leigh Hospital, of a heart attack.
Mrs. Alexander was born in South Norfolk and was the widow of Samuel W. Alexander Sr. She taught at Booker T. Washington and Norview high schools and retired from the Norfolk school system 17 years ago with 33 years of service. She was a member of St. James AME Church, Norfolk, where she was also a Sunday School teacher and member of the Stewardess Board. She was a member of Retired Teachers of Norfolk and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and was a recipient of the sorority's Unsung Hero Award.
Survivors include a daughter, Verdonda Alexander Wright of Virginia Beach; a son, Sam Alexander of Kaiserslautern, Germany; two sisters, Elizabeth Hahn and Charlotte Catlin, both of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, Bostick Williams of Chesapeake and Franklin Williams of Asheville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Kimberly Wright, Debra Wright, Warren Alexander, Brigitte Alexander and Timothy A. Wright; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Alexander of Kaiserslautern, Germany; a son-in-law, the Rev. Timothy E. Wright of Virginia Beach; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in St. James AME Church, Dinwiddie St., Norfolk, by the Rev. William Dyson. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at 1905 Honeycutt Court, Virginia Beach, where they will assemble at 10 a.m. Friday for the processional to the church.
