Roanoke Island veterinarian Mark Ronald Grossman must serve one year on probation and pay a $1,000 fine for forging prescriptions for Percodan, a U.S. District Court judge has ruled.
On July 7, Grossman pleaded guilty to one count of acquiring a controlled substance by forgery.
He purchased the painkilling narcotics last summer on the Outer Banks. Grossman turned himself in to the state veterinary board shortly thereafter.
``There was no sale of drugs,'' Grossman's attorney, Steven D. Michael, said Monday. ``This was strictly a case of someone who was self-abusing. And he's absolutely still practicing veterinary medicine.''
Under the terms of Grossman's probation, the 40-year-old veterinarian must not possess a firearm or destructive device; must not incur new credit charges or open additional lines of credit without the probation office's approval; and must participate in a drug dependency treatment program.
``He has already completed a 30-day, inpatient drug rehabilitation program,'' Michael said.
