RAIN, RAIN ... WILL IT END?

This has been one of the wettest Julys on record. As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, 11.45 inches of rain had fallen in Norfolk. That's more than twice the average for the entire month, 5.06 inches.

``We are in a very wet pattern that normally we don't see in July,'' said meteorologist David Tollers of the National Weather Service in Norfolk. Usually, midsummer days have a 20 percent to 30 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms, he said. The current weather pattern has created a 50 percent to 60 percent chance.

A cold front that is going to stall over Virginia likely will increase the possibility of rain, meaning Norfolk has a chance of breaking the rainfall record for July, set in 1975. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
