More than 500 people will participate in the 1994 Memory Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. It is a fund-raising event held by the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. The Association hopes that the 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles) walk-a-thon will raise $75,750.
The walks will be simultaneously at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and in Hampton at Fort Monroe. Various satellite walks are being held at nursing home facilities throughout the area. The Hampton Roads Chapter joins Alzheimer's Association chapters in nearly 200 communities across the country in the only nationwide event for Alzheimer's disease. The theme of the event is ``Walk With Me.''
Shelley Fabares, co-star of the hit ABC comedy series ``Coach,'' will serve as the national honorary chair. The local honorary chair is Kelly Wright, weekend news anchor for WAVY-TV, Channel 10.
Funds raised will benefit the Hampton Roads Chapter's support and education services for the 14,000 patients, caregivers and families affected by Alzheimer's disease in this area.
About 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's, a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior.
Major corporate walk sponsors are Adams Outdoor Advertising, Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Hillhaven, Riverside Convalescent Centers, Sentara Life Care Corporation and WAVY-TV 10.
Registration forms are available through the chapter office at 20 The Koger Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, or by calling 459-2405. by CNB
