SAFETY IN NUMBERS AS ANOTHER DB IS SIGNED

The revolving door in the secondary continued to spin Wednesday.

Cornerback Richard Fain was signed, bringing the team to the camp roster limit of 80. He is a former Bengal, Cardinal and Bear who has been out of football since being waived by Chicago before last season. He started two games with the Bears in '92 and for the season had 48 tackles.

He practiced Wednesday and will wear No. 21, for now. Fain's signing follows the signing last week of safety Martin Bayless, and workouts of Jerry Gray and Aaron Emanuel.

STADIUM TURNAROUND: The Laurel City Council has tabled a resolution opposing construction of a stadium for the Redskins.

Less than three weeks ago, four of the five council members supported the measure, but the council voted, 3-1, with one abstention to table the measure.

The council's attitude adjustment came after it received a last-minute shower of attention.

MEDICAL UPDATE: Center John Gesek will spend another day or two in Arlington Hospital. He's being given cortisone treatments for what trainer Bubba Tyer called a ``nerve root irritation.'' It's what caused last week's back spasms. It's also a similar situation to one that caused Gesek to miss two weeks of the 1990 season, when he played for the Cowboys. . . . Offensive lineman Joe Patton has a sprained knee that will keep him out of action 5-7 days. . . . Fullback Frank Wycheck, bothered by a concussion suffered last week, returned to practice. He did not take part in any contact work.

ODDS AND ENDS: The agent for Brian Satterfield, free-agent running back from North Alabama who quit camp Monday, phoned the Redskins to say his client might be interested in coming back. . . . Asked what he'd like to see the team do better, coach Norv Turner joked, ``There's this quarterback out there. . expected at camp until next week. by CNB
