Anne S. Evans (letter, July 18) claims that ``North bashers'' forget that Virginia Republicans have spoken in favor of North, that insults to North are insults to Virginia Republicans and that North grows stronger the more he is ``bashed.'' She is wrong on all counts.
North was nominated by a narrow, weighted-vote majority of the tiny percentage of Virginia Republicans who attended the senatorial nominating convention. A great many Virginia Republicans feel the same distaste for North's brand of dishonesty and demagoguery as do non-Republican Virginians.
``Bashing'' North does not insult Virginia Republicans. North, the proven perjurer, is the insult. ``Bashing'' North does not make him stronger. Rather, telling the truth about how unfit North is for public office, as have all of the people of consequence who worked with him in President Reagan's administration, increases the level of contempt that all people who value integrity should feel for North.
I am 45 years old and am proud of the fact that I have voted for the Republican nominees for statewide and national office in every election since I became eligible to vote. That string will be broken this year. However, I can, and will, still vote for a Republican of integrity - Marshall Coleman.
