A committee of the Coastal Resources Commission on Thursday tabled a request from Elizabeth City seeking to remove some environmental protections from a shallow drinking-water well field that lies partly in the Dismal Swamp.
The committee voted to table the request after its chairman, Richard J. Hargitt, said he would consider the request only after receiving written notification from the state Division of Health Services, which regulates drinking water supplies, that the move would not harm Elizabeth City's drinking water.
Elizabeth City officials said the site, part of which lies along the route of a proposed bypass around the city, does not need the additional protection because the city now gets its drinking water from deeper wells that are less likely to be contaminated by adjacent development.
If the committee receives the requested information from state health officials, it will consider the city's request at its September meeting in Wilmington, Hargitt said.
