HEAT KILLED TODDLER

The 20-month-old boy who perished inside a van that was parked for several hours Wednesday with its windows up died of a heat-related condition, a medical examiner said Thursday.

Andrew D. Oliver II died of hyperthermia, said Dr. N. Turner Gray, medical examiner for Virginia Beach. The condition results from exposure to high heat, resulting in abnormally high body temperatures.

On Wednesday, Andrew was one of two children who spent more than four hours in a stifling van after the driver lost consciousness because of what police believe was a diabetic reaction. The three went unnoticed in the parking lot of the Oceanfront Area Library from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Andrew was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, 21-year-old Tara Oliver, of the 500 block of Arbre Court, was released from a hospital Thursday. An 8-month-old girl whom Tara Oliver was babysitting, Ashley Blevins, of the 4600 block of Mistral Lane, was still listed in critical condition at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk.
