Sidney L. Faucette's recent article on accelerated schools (Another View, July 19) has prompted me to write this letter to commend three other programs which are currently operating in Virginia Beach schools under his leadership.
The first of these is called Faculty Planning Council. Leadership has been shifted in Virginia Beach from the central administration building to the school site. The Faculty Planning Council consists of about 12 teachers and administrators who make decisions for their school. They decide, among other things, the goals of that school.
These same members serve on another body, the School Planning Council, which also includes parents. Parents can now feel that their opinions are truly important in the decision-making process for their child's school.
Finally, I would like to commend Dr. Faucette's communication cluster groups. These groups are composed of two teacher representatives from every school who meet with Dr. Faucette to voice concerns. The lines of communication have never been better.
In an era of public disappointment with schools, it is indeed refreshing to know that there is at least one school system and at least one superintendent willing to try new and innovative approaches.
