Dewey Olier Pettyjohn, 87, died Saturday, July 23, 1994, in the Virginia Mennonite Home, Harrisonburg.
Mr. Pettyjohn was a native of Washington County, Va. He was an employee of Peoples Security Insurance Company, having lived in Bristol, Norton and Portsmouth, Va., working as an agent, superintendent and district manager. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Monumental United Methodist Church and chaired the Heart Fund Drive in Portsmouth. Mr. Pettyjohn was preceded in death by his wife, Vestal Hall Pettyjohn.
Survivors include one daughter, Florence P. Ellis of Albuquerque, N.M.; one son, the Rev. Jack H. Pettyjohn of Staunton, Va.; two sisters, Lucille P. Stewart of Tampa, Fla., and Claribel P. McCormick of Roanoke; one brother, H. Burris Pettyjohn of Bristol, Va.; five granchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Dewey Olier Pettyjohn will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Akard Funeral Home, Bristol, Tenn., with the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Three Springs. Pallbearers will be Daniel Pettyjohn, John Ellis, Neal Ocheltree, Glen Eads, Tommy Cross, Carol Cross and Kyle Malone. Memorials may be made to the Monumental United Methodist Church of Portsmouth. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today, prior to the service.
