The AIDS drug AZT should be approved for use by HIV-infected pregnant women to prevent spread of the disease to their babies, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended.
Burroughs Wellcome Co., which makes AZT under the trade name Retrovir, said studies showed pregnant women using the drug after the 14th week of gestation can reduce HIV transmission to their unborn infants by two-thirds.
