NIGHT OUT SET FOR NATIONAL CRIME WATCH THE EVENT IS DESIGNED TO HEIGHTEN AWARENESS TO AND ENCOURAGE SUPPORT FOR ANTI-CRIME EFFORTS.

Residents of Virginia Beach will be eating watermelon, gathering for cookouts and holding bike rodeos, parades, walks and races Tuesday when Virginia Beach joins the rest of the nation in participating in the 11th annual National Night Out Celebration.

This event, a coast-to-coast crime watch, is designed to heighten awareness to crime and drug prevention, generate participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/ community relations, and send a message to criminals, letting them know neighborhoods are getting organized and fighting back.

Today at 7:30 p.m., the Police Department's 1st Precinct and the 1st Precinct Neighborhood Watches are sponsoring a kickoff Community Parade at Lynnhaven Mall. It will begin in the parking lot near Leggett and proceed around the mall. Mayor Meyera Oberndorf, McGruff the crime dog, Freddy the fire truck, Fire Company 3 and the Oceana Naval Air Station color guard will be among the participants. Children are invited to bring their bicycles and wagons and join in. Light refreshments and prizes are planned.

On Tuesday, residents in Virginia Beach are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Here are some of the things that will be happening in Virginia Beach neighborhoods.

Princess Anne Crossing - watermelon social, 7 p.m., city park off Cantwell Road.

Bow Creek Boulevard - lemonade stand, 7 p.m., block captain's driveway.

Scarborough Square - family get-together, 7 p.m., off Warwick Drive.

Lynnhaven Woods - watermelon social, 7 p.m., park off Golden Maple Drive or Silver Maple Court.

Lake Placid - bike rodeo, 7:30 p.m., park entrance.

Hunt Club Forest - walk-run race, 7 p.m. Race begins at city park off Hunts Neck Trail. Ends with ice cream social.

Twin Canal, Bridle Creek and Pecan Gardens - between 6 and 8 p.m., dessert social.

Lake Edward - parade, 7 p.m. A city garbage truck will be hauling away residents dressed as disreputable characters while other residents walk behind the truck carrying shovels and brooms.

Wesleyan Forest - 6:30 p.m., car bashing, 5900 Buckminister Lane. Residents will take turns beating a car.

Colonial Run Mobile Park - 7:30 p.m., talent show, off Baker Road behind Hardee's.

Seabreeze Farms - between 8 and 10 p.m., dessert social, corner of Seabreeze Trail and Five Hill Trail.

Aragona Village 3 - Neighborhood Watch cookouts; 6-8 p.m., 649 Kenneth Road; 6:30 p.m., 644 Spooner Road; 6:30-8:30 p.m., 649 Aragona Blvd.; 5-8 p.m., 645 Kellam Road; 6-9 p.m., 721 Spooner Road.
