THE FIRST PITCH

Bennett's Creek Women's Softball League has opened its 10th season with a circuit that has expanded from five to seven teams over the past year.

Opening day ceremonies were rained out July 23, but they have been rescheduled for Aug. 27 when the two-day end of season tournament begins. All games are played on the three fields behind Driver Elementary, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

There are usually three seven-inning games a night, Monday through Thursday with Friday serving as a rain date. Each squad will play 18 games and the last regular season contests will be Thursday, Aug. 25.

Each team is allowed 13 players and the age range is 18 to 80, according to league president Debra Wilburn, who is pregnant and sitting out this season. Wilburn adds there are a few mother-daughter combinations in the circuit.

Most of the players are from Suffolk, but many come from Isle of Wight, Chesapeake and Norfolk.

This year's lineup by name, sponsor and coach are: Generics, Bennett's Creek Pharmacy, Brad Bowman; Burnin' Rubber, Harris Tire Service, Don Garnett; Sweepers, Commercial Power Sweepers, Don Speight; Stackers, Coastal Lumber Company, Bill Anspach; No-Bull Dozers, Rea Construction, Bill Fleming; Gamblers, West Service Center, Terry Wilburn, and Slam-Hers, Al Smith's Body Shop, Rick Seitz.

Other league officers, besides Wilburn, are Vickie Jarvis, vice-president; Sue Fleming, secretary; Sherry Stewart, treasurer; Renee Tribble, player agent, and Judy Waters, player representative. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by MICHAEL KESTNER
