Alice A. Durgan of the 700 block of 15th St., a retired schoolteacher, died July 25, 1994, in Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Durgan was born in Atlanta, Ga. She retired from Virginia Beach schools after 38 years and was a member of St. Mark AME Church in Virginia Beach, President of Stewardess Board (NU)1, Vice President, Daughters of St. Mark, she was a former class leader and usher. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Carnation Social and savings club, United Order of Tents and was Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Durgan taught Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when she was teaching in Atlanta. Education: Public Schools of Atlanta, Ga. Graduate of Morris Brown College in Atlanta. Further study at Columbia University, University of Virginia and Norfolk State University. Taught in the Virginia Beach School System for 22 years. She was the widow of King W. Durgan, Jr.
Survivors include a sister, Nixerine Miles; a brother, Richard Austell, Sr.; niece/daughter, Lois West; nephew, Richard West; great-niece, Laquita West; and devoted cousins, Mary Louise Durgan Johnson and Albert Johnson, all from Atlanta, Ga.; niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sullivan, Jr., of Virginia Beach; a host of nieces, nephews and her extended family, and former students throughout Tidewater.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mark AME Church by the Rev. H.E. Jefferson. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk, is handling arrangements. The body will be placed in the church at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
