Robert G. Krebs, Sr., Colonel, United States Army, Retired, 72, of Virginia Beach, died July 28 of cancer in his home.
Colonel Krebs was born in Portland, Oregon, and lived in Virginia Beach since his retirement from military service in 1975. Following two years of undergraduate schooling at the University of Oregon, Colonel Krebs received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he graduated in 1945. In 1949, he earned a masters degree from the University of Virginia. Colonel Krebs had a distinguished 30-year military career. His final assignment was as Chief of Staff at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk.
In recent years, Colonel Krebs was active in work with the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, first as a Deacon and then as an Elder. In addition, he was a member of the Church Chancel Choir and the Tuesday morning Men's Bible Breakfast Group. After his retirement, he became very active with the United States Tennis Association as an umpire at both local and national levels. This work included umpiring at U.S. Opens in New York and the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He then served as a member of the USTA Tennis Rules Committee. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club. Also, he worked with the Republican Party both on a local and statewide basis and served on the Virginia Beach Republican City Committee.
Survivors include his wife Janis; his daughter Janis Krebs Smith of Norfolk; his son Lieutenant Colonel (USA, Retired) Robert G. Krebs, Jr. of Virginia Beach; his son William K. Krebs of Greensboro, N.C.; his sister Margaret Krebs Brockway of Sisters, Oregon; and, seven grandchildren: Benjamin and Laura Smith of Norfolk; Stephanie and Beth Krebs of Virginia Beach; and William, Turner and Kathryn Krebs of Greensboro.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach at 11:00 on August 4th by his friend and pastor, Dr. J. Scottie Griffin. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery, following a service at the Old Chapel, Fort Myer, on August 5th at 9 a.m.
