A motorist who apparently was trying to beat a slow-moving train was killed early Saturday when the train struck his car.
Police identified the victim as Billy Wiggs Jr., 32, of the 400 block of Freeman Ave.
The accident occurred at 1:19 a.m. at an uncontrolled crossing at Freeman Avenue and Republic Road, police said.
Witnesses told police that Wiggs, who was driving a 1980 Chevrolet Camaro, slowed at the crossing, which is marked by two signs, and then sped up.
The car was hit by the engine, which was traveling at 3 mph.
