Once a witness, now a suspect.
David Harris, 22, of the 3200 block of Kimball Terrace, was arrested early Monday and charged along with another man with a Jan. 29 slaying that Harris originally told police he had witnessed.
Harris had told police that he was with 35-year-old Wayne A. Myrie of Jamaica when two men approached Myrie's car parked in the 1400 block of Calhoun St. around 2 a.m. One of the men shot Myrie, Harris told detectives.
Myrie was able to drive to the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Tidewater Drive before collapsing, and was taken by ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Harris later gave police a description of the two men he said were involved in the shooting, but said he didn't know them.
Police now speculate that Harris had set up Myrie for a robbery.
``Over the course of the investigation we discovered a number of inconsistencies in his story,'' police spokesman Larry Hill said. ``Based on information we were later able to gather, we determined that Harris himself was involved.''
Myrie had been discharged from the Navy shortly before his death and was planning to travel to New York City to reunite with family members, according to police.
Police say that Myrie and Harris were acquainted but would not comment on the nature of their relationship.
Harris and Richard Harper, 22, of the 200 block of W. 28th St. are being held without bail in the city jail on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
