2 GREAT BRIDGE PLAYERS ARE HEADED TO NORFOLK STATE BASEBALL

Two members of Great Bridge's Southeastern District champion baseball team are headed to Norfolk State.

David Ellyson and Rufus Hinton, who led the Wildcats to the district title, head up coach Marty Miller's recruiting class.

Ellyson, a pitcher, signed July 22. Hinton, who has not qualified academically, said he plans to enroll at Norfolk State and sit out a year.

Ellyson was 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA for Great Bridge. He also hit .386. Ellyson was a first-team all-district selection at designated hitter and a second-team pick as a pitcher. Ellyson is currently unbeaten pitching for Greenbrier Post 280 in American Legion competition.

The Spartans, who finished 29-14 last season, picked up several other local players: Green Run catcher Michael Olmstead, Wilson infielder William Herndon, Deep Creek pitcher Charles Misuma, Booker T. Washington pitcher John Coles, and Deep Creek first baseman Maurice Cuffee.

FOOTBALL FACTS: The Spartans' season opener against Virginia State on Sept. 3 may be televised on Home Team Sports, according to CIAA commissioner Leon Kerry.

``We've got the commitment, we're trying to put together the dollars right now,'' Kerry said. ``If we don't get it, it's not because we haven't tried.''

Kerry said he's not sure if the game would be carried live or on tape delay.

But the 7 p.m. starting time won't change, he said.

Meanwhile, Norfolk State's season finale, Nov. 12 against Kentucky State, will be played at Indian River High School. The Spartans were unable to get Foreman Field because it is booked for the Oyster Bowl. Harbor Park is also booked. Winston-Salem State and Virginia State will play there in the Fish Bowl.

RIDDICK RETURNING: Norfolk State grad Steve Riddick, who won a gold medal in the 100 meters at the 1976 Olympics, will probably be working as an assistant track coach next season, athletic director Dick Price said.

``There's a great possibility he'll be working with us,'' Price said. ``He may come as a graduate assistant.''

Several high school coaches report that Riddick has already been on the recruiting trail. Price said Riddick's appointment is subject to the approval of Norfolk State president Harrison Wilson. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
