A proposed Knotts Island subdivision that has drawn fire from some island residents has cleared its first major hurdle.
A sketch plan and special use permit for 16-lot Knotts Landing was approved 4-to-1 Monday night by the Currituck County Board of Commissioners.
Some residents complained at a July public hearing that the new development along a dangerous S curve on N.C. 615, the main thoroughfare, would increase the risk of vehicular crashes.
North Carolina Department of Transportation officials suggested acquiring a 400-foot section of land across from the proposed entrance and keeping it regularly trimmed.
The area currently contains soybean crops that can obstruct a motorist's view.
Jerry Wright, the county's commissioner at large, voted against approving the sketch plan.
``I just felt like it was not reasonable to require it of the developer,'' Wright said Tuesday morning. ``If the gentleman across the road doesn't want the subdivision, then he doesn't have to grant the easement on his property.''
The proposed subdivision includes a total of 19 lots of 1.4 to 12 acres located west of N.C. 615, near Ferry Dock Road. A gravel road leading to a 10-slip boat marina on the Currituck Sound also is planned on the property.
Two more public hearings will be held before the project can receive final approval from the county's board of commissioners. by CNB
