WOMAN FOUND SLAIN AT BEACH

Police late Tuesday launched their 29th homicide investigation of the year when the body of a woman in her 20s was found in an apartment off Virginia Beach Boulevard.

The slaying ties the number of homicide cases detectives investigated in 1991 and virtually assures that 1994 will be the city's deadliest year ever.

Police spokesman Mike Carey said a man walked into the 2nd Precinct shortly before 10:30 p.m. and told the desk clerk that a woman might be dead in the Berkshire Apartments near Virginia Beach Boulevard and First Colonial Road. Police discovered the body in an upstairs apartment on Twin Oaks Lane.

A police source said the man who alerted investigators later confessed to the killing, but Carey said he did not have that information. He did say, however, that the man had been taken to police headquarters for further questioning.

Police had not released the name of either the man or the woman late Tuesday.
