Twenty-two national agricultural groups are calling upon the Senate to reject an oil industry-backed amendment that would repeal a new Environmental Protection Agency program designed to use more renewable fuels in gasoline. The agricultural groups range from soybean and sugarbeet growers to cattlemen and cotton farmers. Renewable fuels, such as corn-based ethanol, would be required in 15 percent of reformulated gasoline starting in 1995 and 30 percent in 1996 under an EPA rule adopted June 30. Total renewable additives in all gasoline sold in the United States, however, would amount to only one-half of 1 percent, EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner has said. by CNB
