COLLEGE PRESIDENT'S CONTRACT EXTENDED

Edward E. Brickell, president of the Medical College of Hampton Roads and the highest-paid college president in the region, has won a three-year contract extension.

The Board of Visitors of the medical school approved extending his contract until July 1, 1997.

``We are very pleased to have the steady hand, leadership and vision of Ed Brickell at the helm at a time when the medical school is embarking on its strategic plan and a number of major initiatives,'' said Andrew S. Fine, rector of the board.

The medical school last year began a five-year, $62 million fund-raising campaign. It has tallied more than $11 million so far.

Brickell could not be reached, and medical school officials declined to disclose his new salary.

But in the school's latest IRS 990 tax form, which covers the 1992-93 school year, his salary was listed as $240,782 - more than that of any other Hampton Roads college president.

Brickell was appointed president of the college on Aug. 1, 1988. Before that, he served for 21 years as schools superintendent in Virginia Beach. by CNB
