A motorist was critically injured Tuesday morning when he was thrown 30 feet from his car into the high-occupancy lane of westbound Interstate 64, Virginia State Police said.
The driver, who has not been identified, was speeding when he tried to pass a car, and his vehicle struck a guardrail, said Tammy Van Dame of the state police.
The 1991 Plymouth Sundance rolled over three times. A passenger, Daniel E. Jenkins, 27, of Norfolk, was thrown from the front passenger seat to the back seat, Van Dame said.
The accident occurred at 7:15 a.m. between the Twin Bridges and the Indian River Road exit.
Traffic was backed up to the Greenbrier exit and was stalled for more than an hour.
