An 18-year-old mother and a 36-year-old grandmother were charged Thursday with felony child neglect in the death of a 3-year-old girl.
The mother, Zakia Collins, and grandmother, Alfreda Collins, took Shamonte Collins to DePaul Medical Center about 7 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
The child was not breathing and could not be resuscitated, and there were signs of abuse, police spokesman Larry Hill said.
The mother and grandmother, who live in the 8600 block of O'Conner Crescent, said that they were both home with Shamonte on Wednesday evening and that when they checked on her, they found the girl not breathing.
They told hospital officials they performed CPR but could not revive the child.
The hospital notified police of the incident, and the two women were charged Thursday morning. Alfreda Collins was given a $25,000 bond, and Zakia Collins was given a $10,000 bond.
They are expected to be arraigned in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court today.
