Frank K. Nyikos was born in Hovey, Hungary, on Aug. 14, 1892, 27 years after the Civil War ended. He was 101 years old at the time of his death on Aug. 3, 1994. He died in a local hospital. Mr. Nyikos resided in the 3800 block of Thalia Drive, Virginia Beach.
Mr. Nyikos retired after 32 years service as a machine layout inspector with the Bendix Corporation of South Bend, Ind.
Mr. Nyikos and his father left Sopron, Hungary, in 1909. They sailed on board the steamship ``Carolina'' and arrived at Ellis Island, N.Y., after a 14 day voyage. They left New York for South Bend, Ind., where Mr. Nyikos worked as a cabinet finisher for the Singer Sewing Machine Co.
In 1912, Mr. Nyikos joined the U.S. 6th Field Artillery and was trained as a musician/orderly (bugler). He went on to become the regimental trumpeter. The 6th Field Artillery became the support unit for the 13th Cavalry. During the Mexican Border Campaign the 6th Field Artillery was transferred to Brownsville, Texas. It was during this time that Pancho Villa, the Mexican bandit, was raiding across the U.S. border.
Mr. Nyikos was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Mary Nyikos. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, and was an avid fisherman and gardener.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Miller. He is survived by one daughter, Joan Peters of Virginia Beach; one brother, Joseph Nyikos of South Bend, Ind.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Father James M. Noto will conduct the service. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling the services.
