A registered nurse at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, convicted earlier this year of stealing prescription drugs, was sentenced Wednesday to three years supervised probation.
The nurse, Cynthia A. Nowlin, 34, of Virginia Beach, had faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. She pleaded guilty in Circuit Court to two counts of prescription fraud and was found guilty at a hearing May 19.
Nowlin originally was charged with 12 counts of prescription fraud when she was arrested Oct. 14. She admitted taking Tylox, a narcotic painkiller, under patients' names, then using the drug herself, court records show.
The prescription fraud occurred last year from Jan. 1 to April 27. Nowlin became addicted to narcotics after surgery for abdominal pain, court records show. The other 10 counts were deferred as part of the plea agreement.
