JOSEPH E. BATTEN

Joseph Edward Batten, 67, of the 4200 block of Edinburgh Drive, died Aug. 4, 1994, in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Batten was born in Princess Anne County. He was a retired magistrate, Virginia Supreme Court serving Virginia Beach, and also currently employed as a private processor. He was a member of Thalia Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder; member of Princess Anne Masonic Lodge (NU)25 AF & AM; Khedive Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. and its Brass Band for 40 years; member of Virginia Beach Shrine Club, Grice Commandery (NU)16 - Knights Templar Norfolk, United Royal Arch Chapter No. 1, Virginia Magistrates Association, Police Association of Virginia and Fraternal Order of Police. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Kreger Batten; and three sons, David Wiley Batten of Charleston, W.Va., and Edward Joseph Batten and Andrew Lewis Batten, both of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Creeds, by the Rev. T.E. Thieman. Burial will be in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday for a visitation. Memorial donations may be made to Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital. Masonic rites will be accorded at the church.
