A West African exchange student was found floating face down in a backyard pool in the 5700 block of Avalon Woods Drive on Friday afternoon.
Friends of the pool's owners stopped by for a swim and discovered the body. The 20-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim, who was attending college in Ohio, had arrived in Virginia Beach 10 days ago, police said. She had met one of the home's residents at a Christian camp and accepted an invitation to spend August in the city. Police would not release the woman's identity until her family had been notified.
Police said the cause of death appeared to be drowning, but the investigation is continuing.
