NO VITAL INTEREST

President Clinton is preparing once again to misuse U.S. armed forces in a location and on a mission where we have no vital interests. Citizens should contact their senators and congressmen to stop this pending waste of American wealth, time and lives in Haiti.

The armed forces exist to apply deadly force when necessary to protect our vital interests.

No interest of any consequence is involved in Haiti. It has no military that could threaten us, our trade or our allies. It does not host armed forces of a hostile power, and it produces no goods or services vital to our economy. Nor does it have any natural resources vital to us.

Whether Cedras or Aristide is in power is a matter for the people of Haiti to resolve. If they enjoyed the right to keep and bear arms, perhaps both despots and their odious regimes would have been disposed of long ago.

Let's mind our own business and let the Haitians shape their destiny. Sagging approval ratings of the president are no reason for military deployment.
