The Navy and Coast Guard suspended their search Saturday for a 21-year-old Delaware man who was reported overboard from a Navy ship Friday afternoon.
The incident delayed the arrival of the ship, the Supply, at its new base in Norfolk. The fast combat support ship is now slated to tie up at 9:30 a.m. today at Pier 12 of the Norfolk Naval Station.
The crewman was identified as Jabbrar Griffin, of Claymont, Del. He was reported overboard about 4:30 p.m. Friday while the ship was about 35 miles off Oregon Inlet.
The Supply, joined Saturday by the carrier Theodore Roosevelt, the Coast Guard cutter Point Highland and other Navy and Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, searched the area for about 24 hours.
Just about the time the man went overboard, weather in the area turned stormy, and complicated search efforts Saturday afternoon and evening.
There was no sign of the missing crewman by late Saturday afternoon. The search was called off about 5 p.m.
It was unclear Saturday how the crewman went overboard. The Navy still is investigating the incident. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
