Gerald A. Porterfield was appointed vice president and director of marketing with Talbot Group in Virginia Beach. Porterfield, a professional land planner and landscape architect, has been director of community design with the firm for 15 years.

James E. Gehman was named director of architecture with Glenn and Sadler Associates Inc. in Norfolk. Gehman had been president of Gehman & Associates in Norfolk. HOSPITALITY

Busch Properties Inc. in Williamsburg named Terri Haack vice president and general manager of its Kingsmill Resort, and Bill Voliva vice president of its Kingsmill on the James. Haack has been general manager with Kingsmill since 1992. Voliva has been with Kingsmill for 19 years. LAW

Maitland G. Freed was appointed an associate with the law firm of Bruce A. Wilcox in Norfolk. Freed retired from the Judge Advocate General's Corps with the Navy. MANUFACTURING

nVIEW Corp. in Newport News named Joel A. Carney executive vice president and chief operating officer, Carol M. Wilson director of human resources, and Alan B. Forman director of marketing.

Carney joined the manufacturer of electronic image projection products in 1992, and had been senior vice president and general manager since November 1993.

Wilson had been business development manager with Sam's Club, a division of Wal-Mart Inc., in Newport News. Forman had been president of Value-Added Leasing Corp. in Raleigh. MEDIA

Joe Antle was named advertising director with The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star in Norfolk.

Antle, who joined the newspapers in 1981, has held several management positions, most recently advertising director with the Greensboro News & Record.

Landmark Communications Inc. owns the Norfolk and Greensboro newspapers. ORGANIZATIONS

Donald M. Dale was elected president of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Dale is a managing partner with the certified public accounting firm of Goodman & Co. in Norfolk.

G. William Birkhead was named to the board of directors with the Maritime Law Association of the United States.

The group offers a forum to discuss problems affecting maritime law and to promote uniformity in enacting and administrating the law. Birkhead is a partner in the law firm of Vandeventer, Black, Meredith & Martin in Norfolk. SERVICE

Advex Corp. in Hampton promoted Victor W. Brown to vice president of finance and William A. Woods to chief operating officer.

Brown, a certified public accountant, has been with the precision machining, fabricating and non-destructive testing services company since 1990, most recently as controller.

Woods joined the company in 1985, and had been corporate vice president.
