The 63-acre Lassiter-Hanes tract in Buxton Woods on Hatteras Island has been purchased by the Nature Conservancy and will be given to the state of North Carolina as an addition to the 756-acre Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve.
Sale price was about $360,000, said a member of the Lassiter family.
The main Buxton Woods area, covering 3,000 acres, is the largest maritime forest remaining on North Carolina's Outer Banks, according to Ida Phillips, a spokeswoman for the Nature Conservancy headquarters in Carrboro.
``The protection of Buxton Woods is critical to Hatteras Island's human population because the forest recharges the freshwater lens that provides the primary water source for several towns,'' said Phillips.
The Lassiter-Hanes tract borders a well field on the Pamlico Sound side of Hatteras Island.
The sale was closed last week by Nature Conservancy officials and representatives of the Hanes and Lassiter families who owned the acreage for years.
Wesley Lassiter, a Dare County real estate executive and a Lassiter heir, handled much of the transaction.
