MUCH-NEEDED NORTHEASTER STIRS WATERS

For the past few weeks, fishermen have been saying that the area needed a good northeast wind to breathe new life into fishing.

That northeaster arrived late Friday. Unfortunately, it hung around through Sunday, forcing many anglers to scrub their plans for weekend outings to the fishing grounds, especially those offshore.

Most boats were forced to remain in port Saturday, and many had to cancel Sunday trips. And the few that did make it out Sunday encountered mediocre success.

Only 10 of 35 charter boats sailed from the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, south of Nags Head. They reported but a single billfish - a white marlin released from the Right Hook.
