PERCY W. MINTON

Percy Wilson Minton, 75, of the 700 block of W. Hayes St., a dry cleaner, died Aug. 7, 1994, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mr. Minton was born in Lewiston Woodville, N.C., and was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, a member of and former chairman of the Board of Deacons and former chairman of the Finance Committee.

Mr. Minton attended N.C. State University and was the retired owner and operator of Minton's Drycleaners in Ahoskie after 42 years. He was a member of the National Institute of Drycleaning and received the Outstanding Drycleaners Award. He was also a member and past president of the Board of Directors of the Ahoskie Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Minton was a former member of Ahoskie Jaycees, participated in writing the History of Hertford County, was chairman of the Hertford County 400th Commemoration, helped organize the Elizabeth II visit and was an active member of the Committee for the Town of Ahoskie Centennial. He also served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a staff sergeant and received the Medal of Honor.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Harrell Minton; two daughters, Sara M. Poag of Greensboro, N.C., and Lil M. Mercer of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Art Minton of Charlotte; three sisters, Louise Mizell of Palmyra, N.C., Agnes Haslett of Suffolk, Va., Anne Williams of Greenville, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Ryan, Adam and Ben.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Ahoskie First Baptist Church by Dr. Jesse Croom. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. Memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie First Baptist Church, Ahoskie, 27910, or to a favorite charity. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is handling arrangements.
